The Specialized Roubaix SL4 Comp UDI2 is a carbon “comfort” road bike designed to be comfortable for long mileage. We took a deeper look at it.
FRAME Specialized SL4 FACT 8r carbon, 1-1/8″ to 1-3/8″ head tube, compact race design, Zertz, internal rear brake cable, OSBB
This bike is comfortable. It’s something you could do a coffee house run on one day and a double century the next. It’s also high tech. It has the latest version of electronic shifting. And most of all it’s affordable. It’s a carbon framed bike, with a majority of good parts at a price point that no other bike out there competes with.
What we liked
The bike has been around for a very long time. It’s a tried and proven bike. With wins in races like the Paris – Roubaix, running across the cobblestones has made this bike famous. It’s a very comfortable and relaxed bike but it get’s out of it’s way when it has to.
The patented Zertz fittings which are front and rear on the bike (as well as the seat post) that remove a bunch of the vibrations out of the ride.
The $3,000 price point for an electronic Ultegra bike is unreal! Just a few years back the electronic shifting just by itself was about $3,000! Shimano has had a couple different versions and runs but they’ve really perfected the system now to have a smaller battery and controller and then to get it down to this price point is pretty sweet!
As for the shifting itself – it’s all fly by wire. The shifting is precise. It works under load, it’s self adjusting, self trimming.
The Praxis Works Crankset is a Santa Cruz based company and they make pretty cool stuff.
Most of the other parts are of the Specialized BG Fit variety which makes getting the proper fit on your bike so much easier.
What we didn’t like
The Fulcrum wheels. They are a cheaper wheel set with open ball hubs. It’s one of the first things we’d replace on the bike.
File this under “unsure”. This bike comes with a great looking Satin Carbon/Rocket Red/Hyper paint scheme. It looks great. There’s a label attached to the bike that essentially says that the colors might/will fade over time.
